Where your talents and the needs of the world cross, there lies your vocation.
Aristotle (384-322 BCE)As the New Year approaches it might be time to ask yourself if you are doing what you are meant to do? How do you ensure that, in 2017, you are living a life of purpose following your vocation? Aristotle puts it so beautifully and so so simply in the above quote. You are doing what you meant to do when:
- You use your God given talents. We all have unique abilities and talents. That doesn't mean you have to be the best at something or even "great" at it...but there is something special that you can do. Sometimes...most times...that something requires some skill development, learning, and lots of practice. I am , for example not the greatest writer or the greatest photographer...I need a lot of work to develop both talents....but I know there is a "little something" there ...that comes from a deep place inside me... I see it as a gift I am meant to share.
- The world needs what you have to offer. What does the world need? Look about you, listen to the people around you...get a sense of what is lacking and ask yourself if you can do some small thing to make it better? I see the world needing hope, connection, a renewed realization of the beauty that surrounds us all and a little hard earned wisdom. So I offer that.
- The talents and the needs of the world cross. What you have to offer is needed by someone somewhere. When that someone recognizes your gift and accepts it..."there in lies your vocation". How will you know when the paths have intertwined? You will feel the passion, the bliss, the sense of timelessness in doing. You will experience peace while the world benefits in at least some small way.
